Clarke loved the idea of bargaining with the craft vendors in South Africa. He bought more junk - carved wooden animals, metal sculptures and wooden masks. But his most prized purchase was a beaded bracelet that says Soweto on it.
You can't get these just anywhere. Even in South Africa, the only place we saw them was in Soweto. Everywhere we went, young black men would see the bracelet and compliment Clarke on his choice. Since we've been home, he hardly takes it off.
He wears it to school, which is a big no-no. Only religious jewelry is allowed. Miraculously, no one has confiscated it yet.
He is so proud. But I'm not sure of what _ going to Soweto, or getting away with breaking the rules.
I guess we'll find out when he loses it. If a teacher takes it, and he really loves the bracelet, he'll go through the steps he has to go through to get it back. But if it's the idea of rebellion that he loves, he'll just replace it with some other minor infraction.
